Veterans Justice Outreach Program - VJO

VJO is a new program that works with law enforcement, courts, jails and other providers to identify and assist eligible Veterans. The purpose of VJO is to avoid unnecessary criminalization of mental illness and extended incarceration among Veterans by ensuring that eligible Veterans in contact with the criminal justice system have access to VHA services as clinically indicated. VJO focuses on:

  1. Courts and Attorneys - Provides information and education on Veterans' issues and services available. Develops and implements Veterans' Courts.
  2. Law Enforcement - Provides training to local law enforcement on Veterans' issues and strategies to help work with Veterans.
  3. Jails - Develops communication with jails to identify Veterans who are waiting to be sentenced and engages Veterans on mental health services.
