Veterans give blood during quarterly blood drive

CASTLE POINT, N.Y. -- A blood donor waits to give blood while Mohammad A. Chhipa of the New York Blood Center readies the equipment at the Castle Point campus of the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System Nov. 19. The blood drives – a partnership with the New York Blood Center -- are conducted quarterly at VA Hudson Valley, varying between the Montrose and Castle Point, N.Y., campuses. Larry Boggs, a U.S. Navy and Gulf War Veteran, said the opportunity to give blood meant the world to him as he finished his donation Nov. 19. “When I was in the Navy, on a battleship, I had an accident, and they used my own blood from the blood bank. They transferred that blood I had donated back to me and it saved my life. After that, I vowed to donate to help save other lives as well because you never know what could happen to anyone.” Corinne Sgorbissa, blood program manager for VA Hudson Valley, emphasized the importance of donating blood. “We do use the blood for our Veterans in the chemotherapy units, and on the wards. I encourage people to come out, donate, and save lives.” (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs photo by Jason Tudor)
